The Work of A Director: Part 3
Marin director John Korty, who won the Academy Award for the documentary "Who Are the DeBolts? And Where Did They Get 19 Kids?" and an Emmy Award for the TV movie "The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman," discusses The Work of A Director.
In Part 3, Editing by Yourself -- or with a Pro? -- you'll get the master filmmaker's take on the following issues -- and more!
If you feel competent as an editor and have the time, it may be best to do it yourself. However, the main asset of a separate editor is another pair of eyes and another brain, another sensibility. It is all very subjective. What to keep. What to toss. How long to make a shot. How short. And a really good editor may come up with a rearrangement of scenes that you never would have thought of. Also, a good editor will finish a job that you have seen too much of or given up on. The problem is often just deciding when to stop fiddling with it.
