Community Media Center of Marin April 2012 E-News

Only one more Day to Support Us in the Knight News Challenge Grant!

Help the Community Media Center of Marin receive the Knight News Challenge grant, which will fund an innovative, story driven, youth media platform.  Click on the link below for an overview-- comments, discussion points, and "likes" go a long way to pushing the application through to the next round!  In fact, the five applications that receive the most support will move into a second round of consideration, along with 95 or so others.  Through March 29, you’ll be able to comment on the Tumblr site and like the ideas you see there.

The Knight News Challenge seeks projects that use the best of existing software and platforms – those already integrated into people’s lives – to find new ways to convey news and information. Winners will be announced in June.

Thomas Peele to Speak at the Marin Media Lecture Series
April 26th at 7 PM, Olney Hall, College of Marin

In an evening co-sponsored by CMCM and the College of Marin, Oakland based journalist Thomas Peele will speak about his book Killing the MessengerKilling the Messenger investigates the murder of Chauncey Bailey, a journalist killed in Oakland in 2007.  Peele examines the historical, political and social forces that led to the most violent act committed against a journalist in the United States in thirty years.  Killing the Messenger reminds us of the power of journalism and why we must continue to investigate and share the stories that matter to us most with our communities.

Thomas Peele is a digital investigative reporter for the Bay Area News Group and the Chauncey Bailey Project.  He is also a lecturer at the University of California Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism.  There will be a Q&A and book signing following the lecture.

This event will be free and open to the public, though donations are strongly encouraged.

In the Gallery
CMCM member Alex Kronik will have his show, Blessings of Babaji, on display in the gallery this month.  Alex has always been fascinated by the culture of India.  When he finally fulfilled his life-long desire to visit India, he traveled the country visiting holy places and meeting traveling mendicants known as Babaji's. The photos that were collected on this journey are featured in our April gallery show.

We are excited to have Alex share his work with CMCM.  Please take the time to enjoy his photos the next time you are in!
