Guerrilleras por Rebecka Bíró & Victoria Montero

Guerrilleras es un trabajo fotográfico y documental, en proceso durante el año 2012-2013, sobre la guerra civil salvadoreña desde una perspectiva de género: la experiencia de la mujer en lucha por cambiar la realidad de su sociedad. El escenario político, económico y social llevó al pueblo a organizarse y a combatir por la liberación nacional. Las mujeres tuvieron múltiples papeles y una participación activa en la guerrilla.

A través de sus relatos buscamos encontrar respuestas a algunos interrogantes: cómo fue la experiencia de la mujer en la guerra, cuál fue su papel dentro de la guerrilla, cómo fue luchar por sobrevivir y proteger a su familia, cómo cambió el paradigma de la mujer dentro de una estructura patriarcal en una sociedad tradicionalmente machista, cuáles fueron las consecuencias y cómo continúa hoy su lucha.

Guerrilleras busca primordialmente ser una herramienta para conservar la memoria histórica. Un material para contribuir y comprender la historia reciente de El Salvador en el marco del conflicto armado. Un instrumento para reflexionar sobre la identidad y el rol de la mujer en la guerra civil. Un objeto de aprendizaje. Una muestra del pasado que siempre es presente y que en voz de sus protagonistas pide no ser olvidado.

"Guerrilleras" is a documentary and photography project about the Salvadoran Civil War (1980-1992) from a gender perspective: the women's experience in the guerrilla. The tragic political, economic and social scene lead the people to organize themselves and fight to change their life conditions. Women had multiple roles and an active participation in the armed conflict.

We seek to find answers to some questions: How was the women's experience in the war, what was their role in the guerrilla, how did they struggle to survive and protect their families, how did it change the women's paradigm within a patriarchal structure in a traditionally male chauvinist society, what were the consequences and how do they continue their struggle today.

"Guerrilleras" primarily seeks to be a tool to preserve the historical memory. A material to help and understand the recent history of El Salvador in the context of the armed conflict. An instrument to reflect on the identity of women in the civil war. A sample of the past that is always present and requests not to be forgotten by its' protagonists.

Artists Bios

Rebecka Bíró was born in Malmo, Sweden in 1980. She has a BA in Media and Communication from Malmo University and a Master in Digital Arts from Pompeu Fabra University, Barcelona, Spain. Since 2012 she has been working on the photography/documentary project Guerrilleras together with Victoria Montero. Guerrilleras was one of the winning projects of the 19th Edition of FotoPres La Caixa.

Victoria Montero was born and raised in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where she studied Photography and got a BA in Graphic Design at the University of Buenos Aires. On 2012 she moved to El Salvador to work on Guerrilleras together with the Swedish visual-artist Rebecka Bíró. While going through the post-production stage of the film, they published a book and exhibited the photo work in San Francisco, Madrid, Barcelona and Zaragoza.

Now based in San Francisco, she is also working on Flowers of May, a film that deals with human rights violations during the Salvadoran Civil War, directed by Christian Figueroa.
