6) Why do you want to serve on the CMCM Board of Directors?
During the last 20 months as a producer and host of a news and information show, Marin Voices and Views, it has become clear to me that the survival of a self sustained Community Media Center is not a luxury, but a vital component of the county’s ability to have local, free and fair expression of thought. Fundamentally, CMCM permits the streaming of ideas that would be lost in the chatter of corporate television. I believe my production experience, legal training and local business contacts can contribute to the Board as it seeks funding, expands the presence of the Media Center and helps make the decisions that will be needed to anchor CMCM’s growth in the coming years.
7) What Relevant experience do you bring to this board position?
Over the last 9 years I have served on the Board of Directors of Consumer Attorneys of California, a Statewide organization of California Trial Attorneys. I have experience in Board Governance, the communication patterns of Board decision making and have come to understand the essential need of a Board to recognize the needs and desires of the individual members of the organization as it moves to shape policy. As a trial lawyer, I understand the art of compromise as essential to reach the goals of any organization. I will bring those ideas with me as I learn and participate with the unique needs of the CMCM Board.
As important, I have had hands on experience in the production of 20 monthly shows. I have seen each of the component parts of studio production, editing and outreach to have the show viewed by the community. I have observed the day to day bee hive of activity that takes place in the Media Center and will strive to express the needs of the people who use the Center for production at each step of Board decision making.
8) What is your vision for CMCM and how will you achieve it?
My vision of CMCM is that it will continue to grow and become a recognized part of the Marin Community. The measurements of growth are not always obvious; clearly, continued increased self produced programs are essential. Equally essential is to navigate the financial issues that must be in place to sustain the continued presence of the center. Production of quality programming with reliable funding will no doubt lead to increased community support. Accomplishing these goals needs to be an ongoing, collaborative, incremental process. We all need to work together to show the community CMCM’s contributions.
